The Rise of Autonomous Cars

Elon Musk recently revealed the Tesla Robotaxi. The Robotaxi is a two-row hatchback that drives entirely by itself. The main controversy surrounding it is that it has absolutely no manual controls—no brakes, no accelerator. It’s like sitting in the back row of an Uber, except you’re in the front seat of your own car! Speaking of “your own car,” Musk also announced that the Robotaxi (also known as the Cybercab) will be available for purchase.

The Robotaxi is expected to be released around 2026 or 2027 with a base price of just $30,000. Because the car is electric, it will be relatively cheap to operate, with estimated costs of 20 cents per mile. When Elon mentioned the Cybercab’s affordable price, he added, “I tend to be a little optimistic.” In 2019, he had also predicted that autonomous cars would be widespread by the end of 2020, but that didn’t quite come true.

The Robotaxi can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Although it looks like a two-row car, it actually only has one row of seats. It’s impressive how Tesla manages to make three-row cars look like two-row models (like the Model X and Y) and now makes a one-row car look like a two-rower (Cybercab). The estimated range is around 200 miles. Despite having only one row, it features a large 20.5-inch center display, though it’s not as large as Lucid’s 34-inch floating display. In addition to the screen, it has forward-facing seats and dual cupholders.

There’s also a new rumor circulating among Tesla fans that Tesla might partner with McDonald’s for the Cybercab. This started because one McDonald’s order receipt had the date “10.10,” and the Tesla event for the Robotaxi was on October 10. Another post suggested “RIP Uber” since many might be ordering McDonald’s through a Tesla. Elon Musk even replied to this with a laughing emoji, which helped the rumor spread further. Some have looked deeply into this theory, which could make an interesting partnership.

In conclusion, the Cybercab, also known as the Robotaxi, has created massive hype and could become a significant advancement in transportation, thus creating a huge hype for many, and may be a really helpful impact on this world.
